New Building Energy & Cost Estimate
You have got to watch a demo to appreciate this great software called DProfiler by Beck Technologies, for building estimation.  It reduces estimating time and cost by over 80%, increases accuracy and permits a firm estimate much earlier in a project life cycle. DProfiler integrates the RS Means comprehensive database of costs plus the eQuest, lifecycle energy cost estimating software with a SketchUp-like 3D model.  Results from DProfiler also include preliminary elevations, floorplans, and details which smoothly import to VersaCAD for finished production of construction documents.  Archway customers of DProfiler include some of the largest contractors in the world.

REPORT

So where is my VersaCAD update?

This has been a popular question lately, and rightfully so.  Since we released VersaCAD for Windows in 2000 we&'ve been good about having a new release of VersaCAD at least once a year, and sometimes twice.  Over the last few years the answer to many of your feature requests has been "we would have to change the database format for that to be possible". Request: Can we have more than 65,000 objects?  Answer: We would need to change the database format. Request: Can we include image files in our drawings?  Answer:  We would need to change the database format. Request: It would be nice to have filled objects?  Answer: database change.  Request: TrueType fonts?  Answer: database change.  ...
Okay, if so many new features would require a database change why didn't we make that change years ago?  There are a number of answers to that question.   When VersaCAD for Windows was first released we wanted to keep file compatibility with VersaCAD DOS to make the transition easier.   Then there was the need to select symbols on screen rather than using digitizers, thus VersaCAD Explorer was born.   However, the biggest reason is our understanding that changing the database was going to take a ton of work and cause a long delay between releases.  Well we finally bit the bullet and started that work over a year ago.  We didn’t talk about it at the time because we hoped we would be done within our year timeframe but that clearly didn’t happen and there is still a work to finish.
For anyone that has used Microsoft Office 2007 you will notice that when you save files the files are no longer .xls for Excel and .doc for Word.  Instead the files are .xlsx and .docx.  The .docx file is actually a zip file.  A zip file is simply a compressed file which can contain one or more other files.  If you rename a .docx file to .zip you can then open up the zip and see a number of files contained within the zip. NOTE: I don't recommend you try this with an important file and you can always rename the file back to .docx to make it again usable by Microsoft Office.  If you were to look at the files contained with the .docx file you would see that they are stored as XML (Extensible Markup Language).  If you want to learn more about  XML go to www.wikipedia.org and search on XML.
So why the story about Microsoft Office, I thought we were talking about VersaCAD?  Well, for the new VersaCAD database we are doing a similar thing.  The new file extension will be .2dx.  This file will be a zipped file containing an XML file inside which will replace today’s .2d file.  There may be other files placed inside of the .2dx file as well.  Having the files stored in an XML format will allow us to add functionality in the future that requires a database change without having to write conversion programs.  If a new field is there VersaCAD would use it and if the field is missing VersaCAD would simply use a default value.  A good example of this would be object fill.  If a circle had a “filled object” flag set then we would fill the object on the screen.  If that field was missing from the file then VersaCAD would not fill the object, which means the object would be drawn as it would be with today’s current VersaCAD.
So what about the Mac?   One of the beauties of going to an XML database is that XML is text based.  This means that once the XML database is implemented on both the Windows and Mac platforms the file formats will be literally identical.  Files can be moved from one platform to the other with no conversions necessary.  You would think that a text based database would create larger files than a binary database, which is what the .2d file is.  This is true, but once we zip the file, which is part of the saving process, the files are actually smaller than existing .2d files.
So how close are we to the new release?  The new XML database is defined and can be read and written by the updated VersaCAD.  This new database will not have a 65,000 object limit.  The new limit will be based upon the amount of memory in your computer.    For the average computer today this should result in the ability to have hundreds of thousands of objects in a single file.  We are currently working on the symbol libraries as they will also need to be updated.  The ability to read/write existing VersaCAD drawings and convert them to the new format is also complete.  As you can imagine we will need to do extensive testing prior to this update being released.
So what about existing files?  Not to worry.  The new version will have the ability to read existing .2d files.
So what will be in this new release?   The removal of the 65,000 object limit (32,000 on the Mac) is by far the biggest feature.  We hope to add the object fill feature as well.  TrueType font support and use of image files within VersaCAD, though the new database will allow for these, will not be implemented until the following release.   We are planning an interim release with some new functionality that does not require database changes (see article).    As always, we are open to hearing your suggestions for features and if they don’t require a database change they might even happen in the interim release.

Explorer for Projects and Batch Plotting 16:24
Explorer for Drawings  6:22
Explorer for Objects  5:23

VersaCAD 2007 for Windows Interim
The project to convert the database continues.   See article.   It is taking much longer than we hoped so we are planning on an interim release later this year, still on the existing database.   New features will include an update to the Translator plus some potential, neat new features.  We are looking at including a spell checker, text window and possibly a way to run macros from VersaCAD Explorer.  This would give users a way to simulate what previously was done via a tablet menu.  This would expand the user of two monitors as Explorer, Translator and other items could be kept on the second screen for easy access.  Stay tuned.

Lost VersaCAD users found!
Nearly every day a long-time VersaCAD user comes back to VersaCAD.  In 2006, 426 VersaCAD users received their first Windows or Mac OS X upgrade.    Super to hear how well they are doing and how well VersaCAD has served them over the years.  For example, John Novak, a mechanical designer in Butler PA has expensive 3D software but still likes his VersaCAD for layout.  He says, “I can do layouts for laser cutting so much faster with VersaCAD”.  He updated his old DOS software to the latest Windows.  Robert Clawson used VersaCAD as part of his facility design work in Las Vegas.  Recently retired and bought his own VersaCAD for his work.   Gary Miller, expert parking designer received his Windows update and has already written a new application for parking lot design and parking structure design.  Howard Gledhill at Jarecki Valves is another.  Many have used VersaCAD productively in their business  for over 20 years.

REPORT

VersaCAD and 3D Revisited

Users tell us that VersaCAD is an outstanding product for layout, design and drafting.  Call it 2D or 2.5D, really doesn’t matter, VersaCAD is a tool for making great designs such as award winning roller brakes, macadamia nut processing plants, elevators, store layout, buildings, schematics or maps.   So, what about this 3D stuff?  Is it really necessary or just a toy?
More and more, 3D is becoming an important part of the design process whether machine design, plant design, building design, or civil design.  Does that mean the need for 2D is over?  No.  There will always be projects for which a good, flexible, versatile 2D CAD package has application.  That is where VersaCAD comes in.
But, what about 3D?  Which are the really good 3D packages and which are most interoperable with VersaCAD.   The answers depend on the discipline you are working with, what you want to achieve and, most importantly, what your customer wants.  Lets look at a few examples:
Let’s say you are an architect and your customer wants you to help with a conceptual study that will involve 3D massing models of a new development.  No question, the product to use would be SketchUp.   There is a free version that will do the job and your customer can use the free software and you can too.  Easy to learn, easy to use, and it is FREE.
On the other hand, suppose your customer wants not only a massing model, but, they want you to do buildable 3D design models from which you can automatically pull off drawings, STL files for 3D printing, schedules and the like. Now called BIM (building information modeling) Then, forget SketchUp, it is going to get you in trouble.  Not to say you couldn’t start with SketchUp and then switch to some other product, but, don’t count on SketchUp sticking with you through the whole project.  You are better off to spend some money for a more comprehensive software to save you time and frustration later.   The short list of  BIM 3D includes:   Bentley Architecture, Autodesk Revit, Archicad, and maybe one or two products from outside the U.S.  No problem in moving drawings cut from these models to VersaCAD via DXF or DWG as they all include that format.  And, you can move 2D geometry from a VersaCAD layout up to any of these 3D.   We believe Bentley’s product is the best, and that is why we represent the product. Reason: Best 3D platform, no internal data translation, best reference file for coordinating disciplines, most disciplines covered, most scalable, generative components.   DWG/DXF to/from VersaCAD works great.
Or, suppose your work is mechanical design.  Now, there are lots of subcategories, say by product designed:  toys, autos, refrigerators, tools, spare parts or airplanes.    Nearly every mechanical 3D works fine with VersaCAD:  Rhino 3D or solidThinking for surface-oriented products, Solid Edge or Solid Works for assemblies of parts (John Novak just told me that he uses Solid Works all the time.  But, he updated his VersaCAD because it is so much faster for layout of laser cut parts).
Or, how about civil  design.  Well, here you have two major categories:   site design and corridor design.   Autodesk is pushing their Civil3D (a combination of their old LDD and CAiCE, the product they purchased and dropped)  Looks pretty but lacks fundamentals such as weak on surveying side.  Bentley offers Geopak, InRoads and PowerCivil.   PowerCivil is best for smaller companies that do site design.   InRoads or Geopak are best for corridor design.  Just see what your state DOT uses, and go with that.  Life will be much simpler and orderly if you use what the DOT uses since that is the top of the food chain.   VersaCAD actually runs good with all of them.  By the way, some still believe VersaCAD is best for civil layout or maps  because of its accurate database, bearing-distance coordinates, ease of use, etc.  If you are doing 3d terrain models, use a 3D.
If you design very specific, repetitive things, you can probably afford a custom system designed specifically for  your work.  A good example is VersaCAD/Parking Structure.   Here is 3D software developed in VersaCAD CPL that runs as an integral part of VersaCAD.   It comes all setup to design a particular 3 bay 5 story parking structure.   But, you can edit any group of the 119 pieces of data and it will completely design, detail, & draw a suitable, near optimal parking structure.   All you have to do is print out the several cross sections, elevations and floor plans plus quantity takeoff and deliver to your customer.  Saves hundreds of man-hours and shortens project schedules.  The price:  $2995.     Or, as another example, suppose you want custom software to design just as specific, but, the software doesn’t currently exist.  Well, you can pay a software house to design software specifically to your needs.  Might cost a lot upfront, but then you would have a real competitive advantage over your competition.  Archway has recently completed a project for a custom software to detail steel studs for residential projects. The software automatically details each stud for a wall, adjusts for doors and windows, and outputs instructions to the machine that makes the studs including end crimps, utility holes and mark numbers.  Software that enables revolutionary productivity.
If you would like to see some short demos of some of the above 3D products, we invite you to go to http://mycadvideos.com This is a new site and we will be putting more videos on the site, so check it out and stay tuned.
Bottom line, many jobs can be done with standard VersaCAD.  But, when the project needs 3D, make sure you get the right tool for the job.  Send us an email with your 3D requirements and we will steer you  in the right direction.

VersaCAD 2007 for Windows.
The project continues.  VersaCAD may become the first CAD software ever to use XML as its working storage.  That means the file would be completely interoperable and readable giving the maximum assurance of future preservation of data.  The new database will also provide unlimited restrictions expanding VersaCAD utility.  The first application may be an improved bill of material along with upgrade of the VersaCAD translator.  This is a huge project so will take some time.

In case you missed it, VersaCAD was reviewed in the June issue of the prestigious Machine Design magazine:
Just go to www.versacad.com and then click on first link. VersaCAD was used to design most of the macadamia nut processing plants in Hawaii in addition to everything from single family homes to condos, hospitals, schools, award winning ski lodges, and even 100,000 square foot retail stores. Not to mention award winning roller skate brakes, valves, and schematics of all types. Hundreds of educators teach CAD with VersaCAD using the course materials provided which include instructor guide and student guide. VersaCAD is the best kept secret in the industry, but, the word is getting out. Designing with CAD doesn't have to be expensive or difficult.Return to TopFree Sketchup 3D for VersaCAD Users
Have you tried Sketchup lately? Sketchup Lite is available on http://www.sketchup.com for free. I downloaded it, installed it, learned how to use it, imported a VersaCAD file, and extruded to a 3D model. The whole process took less than an hour and a half. If all you want is a massing model, or an extrusion from a 2D file for visualization, Sketchup is a neat product. And you can't beat the price. Available for Windows or Mac. REPORT

Customizing VersaCAD for AutomationWhen computers first were used in engineering and design, the objective was to automate the process. Then, in the 70s and increasingly in the 80s, software vendors and users began to focus more on drafting and detailing using the computer as an interactive tool. There were several objections to the automation of design via computers: worry that bugs would lead to design failures and liability, loss of control of design and plain old fear that the computer would replace us engineers and our livelihood. On the positive side, the interactive graphics of computers improved significantly in cost performance to make it more cost effective. And, it is more fun and the user feels more a part of the process. But, when you take a hard-nosed look at the economics, there is no comparison between a fully automated design and an interactive, computer-aided-design. If the computer can be used to automatically design a product or structure, the gains are like 100 to one in productivity while computer-aided-design yields maybe 2 to 1 in productivity vs manual methods.
The best of both worlds is to program the automated portion of the design process in the programming language which nearly all CAD software includes. In VersaCAD Windows it is called CPL (CAD Programming Language) which is very much like C. Actually, the commands are very simple and the power is in all the preprogrammed subroutines which are included and which enable the program-author to input information, calculate, place graphics in the database and then output either to a text file for printing or in the form of a VersaCAD drawing of the end result. AutoCAD uses a cryptic language called LISP. MicroStation supports several languages including MDL (similar to CPL) and Visual BASIC.
Some truly amazing CPL programs are available or being developed for VersaCAD. Working along with symbol libraries and standard VersaCAD files, these programs do offer the user productivity gains of 100 to 1 at very low cost for the software. Many of the programs are kept a secret by the author. This gives the author a great competitive advantage. Here are a few really great ones that are now available for purchase:
Gary Miller, previously founder and president of Jones and Miller is an expert in design of parking lots and parking structures. He wrote one of the first complete, automated design programs for VersaCAD back in the late 80s. At that time, he used the software to give Jones and Miller a competitive advantage which put Gary in the driver's seat on bids for new parking structures. Since he had a 100:1 advantage over his competitors, he could either bid low to win a job and still make a profit, or he could bid at market and make a lot of profit. He and his partner sold out a number of years ago and Gary retired. But, he recently renewed his interest in doing CPL with the current VersaCAD 2006 for Windows. He has already produced a CPL which automates the design of a parking lot. It takes into account the number of entrances, whether planters are required the local code rules for clearances and other data. The user simply fills out the on-screen forms The user simply needs to know the same data that must be available for a manual design. Actually, filling out the onscreen forms is a great reminder of what information is required. When the form is complete, one more click on the “Enter” key and presto, you are looking at the finished drawing of the parking lot on the screen and an analysis report required by the city. The first release of the software was about 6 months ago and there has already been a significant update release of the software which now includes slanted parking spaces, a good user manual and other enhancements. This particular program is priced at $195. Think how long it takes to manually draft a parking lot on CAD and the conclusion is that purchase of this CPL program will payout with one use of the software! He does it because he loves it. We do it to help our VersaCAD users. Gary has allowed us to give the software free to any academic institution. It gives students the opportunity to learn from a very professionally written program.
Gary is currently working on a CPL to automate the design of reinforced concrete parking structures. This takes more data than the parking lot as now it involves any number of floors, types of ramps and the like. But, just like the parking lot program, after entering the data on forms which describe the user and local code requirements, Gary’s program produces floor layout drawings, elevations and detail drawings, all automatically! This takes a project from, say, a 100 hour project to about an hour (actually much much less). What is 100 manhours worth? This software will be offered at less than $1000. Anyone who designs parking structures or parking lots can get the same competitive advantage that Gary enjoyed. Plus, since the process is standardized and automated, the quality of designs is improved as well. If the data is entered correctly, the design meets all codes and standards. Profitability, quality of design and shortened design schedules.
Other examples include: design of memorials for cemeteries which includes many artistic line drawings and symbol libraries. Users output to a vinyl cutter that makes a stencil for sand blasting the actual headstone. This software is used by a dozen or so headstone dealers in the US and elsewhere. Another CPL plus lots of drawings and symbol libraries was contributed by John Bromabaugh John was one of the world’s leading designers of large pipe organs until he recently retired. John has contributed his files and libraries so any purchaser of VersaCAD or renewer of Premium Service can have access at no cost.
If you design anything that can be parameterized, you can put yourself in the position that made Gary Miller unbeatable if you learn CPL and automate your process. Some examples come with VersaCAD. The book “Mastering VersaCAD” covers it. And, you can purchase Gary’s Parking Lot program to see a comprehensive example for just $195.Return to TopTraining Class Schedule

More and more educators are realizing that what is needed is a CAD survey course for middle school and high school students as opposed to in-depth training in a particular product. Students going directly to industry or on to university may encounter any of the 200 CAD software products on the market. The student that has been introduced to 2 or 3 different software will be way ahead of those that know only one, to take the load off the instructor, Archway offers a free CAD Survey courseware including outline of course, daily lesson plans and student guides for 3 products: VersaCAD, Rhino 3D and MicroStation PowerDraft. The free product is composed of older versions. Or, for $1195, the school gets the very latest of each software. VersaCAD Mac campus license available for 50% off normal $995. So, for just $497 get software plus student and instructor guides with right to reproduce. Email for more information.Return to TopVersaCAD Educators' Comments
